Mmmm, new shoes

I went into the Pentlands for a hilly training run on Friday. It was a lovely bright but chilly morning and there was a fair bit of frozen mud underfoot. Unfortunately as the sun warmed up the ground the nice crunchy surface turned into gloopy mud and when I got over the top of Harbour Hill, I found the downhill slope covered in patches of snow broken up by slimy, slippy glaur. I’m not very good at running downhill anyway and my road shoes just didn’t cut it so I had to pick my way down and I probably did twice the distance by the time I zig-zagged across the slope.

So… I visited Run and Become on Saturday morning. I came away with a pair of Brooks Cascadia and some extra enthusiasm courtesy of Adrian Stott the manager, who said that I’d be back for proper studs before long; he’d seen it happen before. He clearly hasn’t seen me trying to run up or down hills but it made me feel good.

Anyway, new shoes have to get an appropriate outing but by Saturday night I realised I had a cold. Sunday’s weather was windy, sleety and alltogether dismal so I was initially quite happy to have a good excuse not to go out, but I did eventually get out for a 9-miler – about half of what I had originally planned but 9 times as far as I thought I would manage – and I really enjoyed it. Bad weather, hills, mud and snow – what more could you ask for?
